Have you been in an accident recently? If so, according to a recent report from YouGov, there’s a good chance it will have been one of the accident situations we will go through right here.
The report looked at accident claims and found that almost one in four UK citizens have had an injury at some point, and that many people were seeking compensation by making a claim.
Read on to find out the most common accidents that people claim for – and, perhaps, take a little more care of yourself!
Injuries at work
When you are at work, your employer must provide a safe and healthy environment for you. It’s the law, and if it is broken, the company you work for will be open to a personal injury claim. There are several important things to do if you have an accident at work, and your employer should act in a very specific way.
If you suffer an injury, you should report it as soon as possible. Your employer has to record the event in an accident book, and they are also responsible for arranging your travel to a hospital, should you need it.
Once you have recovered, you can think about making a claim. You should do so within three years of the event, but in general, the earlier you start, the more chance you have of success. You will normally need a personal injury lawyer. Many will work on a no-win no-fee basis. If you are a member of a union, you can also ask them for legal help. Sixteen percent of all accident claims are to do with injury in the workplace, which is worth bearing in mind if you are an employer.
Accidents in a public place
Have you ever had an accident in a public place? It could be a shop, a park, or even a pavement. If something or someone is at fault, then you could make a claim. For example, retail shops have to abide by very strict regulations, and if they are found to be at fault, you are likely to get some compensation.
It could be a slip on liquid, for example. If the shop hasn’t put a warning sign to indicate there is a slippery floor, then you might have grounds to make a claim. Similarly, if you suffer from a bad trip on a road or pavement due to uneven and dangerous surfaces, you might be able to claim against your local council.
Accidents in public spaces account for 21 percent of all personal injury claims – more than one in five. So, even if you think that no-one is at fault, there’s a good chance that you could get a result if you make the claim.
Automobile accidents
The clear winner in terms of personal injury claims is automobile accidents. They make up half of all claims, when you include all road vehicle types. Whiplash is very common, but due to the speeds involved, there are also plenty of far more serious injuries that result in accidents.
If you want to avoid a road accident, it is vital that you take care on the roads, no matter how good a driver you think you are. The simple fact is that there are terrible drivers out there, and there isn’t much you can do about it, other than drive as safely as possible yourself.
