Long ago, the perception was that marijuana was a natural drug that used by people neglected by the society and everybody else in the world. However, in late 70s, scientists fuelled by curiosity conducted a study for the first time in the world that revealed a number of positive curative effects of marijuana. The study made a mark that marijuana shouldn’t be disregarded as a mere substance.
Therefore, scientists declared it a medical drug – earning itself a new title of Medical Marijuana. Today, you can find a number of countries in the world that have completely legalized the buying, selling, growing, processing and use of marijuana. In U.S., the deployment of marijuana is strictly illegal as authorities still handle it as a drug.
However, about 20 states across the country have legalized medical marijuana due to the substantial benefits that patients in those states have received through cannabis treatment. On the contrary, Marijuana is not a ‘down to earth’ drug as it also comes with a share of injurious risks just like any other drugs.
For instance, if ingested above the required amount, there’s high risk of experiencing extreme anxiety or psychotic reactions –a situation where a person loses touch with reality and might end up becoming paranoid. This is so far the most common effect of overdosing marijuana, attributed to the fact that unlike Opioid receptors, the position of Cannabinoid receptors is not in the brainstem regions that control respiration/breathing.
In layman’s terms, Opium and Marijuana affect different body pathways. Opioid receptors are located in regions that control breathing in the brain. Thus, swallowing too many painkillers will eventually terminate breathing in a person.
On the other hand, Marijuana operates on entirely different sets of pathways known as Cannabinoid receptors, which do not affect respiration/breathing. Therefore, Marijuana cannot cause an individual to cease breathing, regardless of the dose they take in.
Therefore, there are no fatal overdoses resulting from cannabis use according to the National Cancer Institute. This is great news in a time when prescription drugs such as painkillers are causing thousands of deaths annually due to overdose while not a single person has died due to overdose of marijuana.
Marijuana contains about 483 unique chemical compounds categorized as either psychoactive or non-psychoactive constituents. The latter are quite useful in treating ailments such as AIDS and Cancer. If you’re a patient seeking medical marijuana therapy, you need to go to a cannabis dispensary that gives you an appointment with a certified practitioner in the field of medical marijuana treatment.
In states where Medical Marijuana is legal, patients are required to have MMJ cards, issued by the state authorities where it’s a legal drug. If your State has not yet legalized marijuana, then you have no cards to collect.
In sum up, the negative symptoms of medical marijuana overdose are just temporary and only subside within 24 hours. As compared to other drugs, taking too much marijuana will rarely cost your life but the effects of that are real.
